Each show goes much more in depth than "what to do if you are stuck in X city" Anthony tours each city, jam-packing your itinerary while discussing cheap and efficient ways to get around town, tips for places to see, how the culture of the area may differ from yours, and so on. I personally don't mind it too much, although I just hope that's "how he speaks" rather than him trying to use obscene language for laughs. Anthony has a fairly "unrestricted" vocabulary of family-unfriendly language that some viewers may find displeasing. He presents various locations around the world with a dry, but likable humor that helps make an entertaining show while displaying an important contrast to the American culture that he lives in. He owned a shoe store and he made frequent trips to Tokyo to buy shoes.I've never watched any shows starring Anthony before this one, so I didn't know what to expect from him. In fact one of the flight attendants noticed one friendly passenger who was on his trip a few weeks prior.
#THE LAYOVER FREE#
Retirees can travel “space-available” free to Japan. There is an interesting aspect of these military flights. So right around midnight we took off for Oakland, had a beautiful layover, partook of some great, great dining and two days later flew our giant old bird back to St.

So, his job was saved and he was euphoric. Once the door was free, we asked the mechanic if there was any damage and he said no. It was as large as some hangar door on a gigantic airplane hangar. So, we proceeded back up to the cockpit to strap ourselves in again and while we were doing all that we heard this rather loud “Bang” and sure enough the mechanic had let the air out of the tire and the gear door literally released itself from the tire.Ī side note, it must be explained here that the gear door on the Boeing 747 was just huge. The mechanics eyes lit up and responded, “I never thought of that!” The other pilot after really looking things over said to the mechanic, "Why don’t you just let the air out of the tire?” We felt so sorry for that mechanic because he was just distraught and worried about his job and his future. It didn’t make a hole but was sure stuck on that tire. And sure enough there was the gear door sort of punching right into a tire. So we unbuckled and joined him down to the scene of his dilemma. He said it was going to cause some extreme actions in order to separate the landing gear from the tire. He told us he would have to have the more than 400 passengers exit, take all the baggage off, and de-fuel, which would take hours as the old machine held 49,000 gallons of fuel. He told us that he was sure he was going to get fired for what he had done, or rather forgot to do. In his pre-flight inspection he forgot to close the landing gear doors and one of those doors had settled down on a tire and was stuck in the very open condition. Another scrumptious dining place was Scott’s Seafood in Embarcadero right outside China Town.Īnyway, back to flying. After the troops were boarded and we were ready for departure on one of our flights the mechanic showed up in the cockpit with quite a lament. The dining at Fisherman’s Wharf was spectacular. We would immediately head for some Chinese food, take the cable car to some fun location and eventually end up at Fisherman’s Wharf and dine at Ghiradelli Square where they made chocolate right in front of us. What an enlightening escape that was.Īll there is to do around the financial district was so fun.
#THE LAYOVER DRIVER#
San Francisco was always the favorite layover town for airline folks. One time the entire crew rented a van and driver and toured the wine country to the north. Meanwhile we would layover in downtown San Francisco for almost 48 hours and that was pure fun.
#THE LAYOVER PLUS#
We would then take those 400 plus military personnel as far as Oakland, California, where another crew would take them to Yakuska, Japan. Louis where we had about four hours idling time, while the station filled up the airplane with soldier, airman, sailors and even retired ex-military.

We used to ferry the 747 from Minneapolis to St. It was not only the actual flying that gave us a real high, but the associated places this wonderful old bird flew to that was also of great interest. I guess I would answer that by saying flying the Boeing 747 was an exhilarating experience to say the least. I get asked quite often about memorable moments associated with my flying career.
